School days at Pumwicket are divided into three types: structured study, open study, and weekend.
Structured study
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are structured study days. Students have two two-hour classes in the morning, a lunch, and then two more in the evening. Many classes combine years, and muggle subjects are heavily taught. Thus, second years might have muggle studies with third years in first period; English by themselves before lunch; charms with first and third years at third period; and potions theory with the firsties before dinner.
These courses are all taught by the four primary instructors at Pumwicket. There are occasional open hours.
Courses offered include:
- Potions theory
- Magical creation and repair
- Transfiguration
- Maths
- Biology
- English literature
- History (muggle)
- History (magical)
- etc.
Open study
Each Thursday and Friday, first through fifth years have two classes a day; three hours in the morning and three in the evening. These courses are sometimes taught by the primary instructors, sometimes by visiting instructors, and sometimes by seventh-year students. The list of subjects can be very esoteric and vary by the week.
Sixth years primarily have this time free for private projects or one-on-one study with various instructors. If they wish to be particularly advanced in a subject, they will sometimes student-teach a section with supervision. They are expected to produce at least one major project per area of study per semester. These may include off-campus research or service projects if supervision is provided.
Seventh years spend this time similar to sixth-years, with the exception that they are heavily encouraged to teach a three-hour class. They will be supervised by an instructor with regards to curriculum and content, but by and large are left to fend for themselves. Teaching gets them off the hook for two projects; one for teaching, one for having a prep period.
Weekend
Most extra-curricular activities take place on the week-ends; clubs do not need a professor as an advisor, so long as they don't spend any money.
